Tulpan



Just watched this film last week. Set on the Kazakh steppe, which looks like a beautiful and challenging place to live. The whole movie charmed and delighted me; it was such a great mix of sincere human emotion and an alien, almost absurd setting. Plus a healthy amount of humor.

Best and grossest animal-birth scene in a movie that I've ever seen. But it has many other merits as well, from the innocent joy of childhood depicted to the treatment of marriage as a survival strategy in a harsh climate. Listening to Kazakh being spoken and sung was a bonus as well.
